A Mother’s Faith

When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed.  So he went in and shut the door behind the two fo them and prayed to the Lord.  Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm.  Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him.  The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.  Then he summoned Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite.”  So he called her.  And when she came to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground.  Then she picked up her son and went out.  2 Kings 4: 32-37

Read 2 Kings 4:18-37 for context

A grieving mother whose child has died.  This prudent pious mother guarded her mouth under her affliction of death.  She did not murmur words.  This Shunammite woman had a strong belief that her child will come back to life.  She accounts that God is able to raise him from the dead.

She had heard of the raising of the widow’s son fo Sareph and that spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha.  She had confidence in God’s goodness.  She was ready to believe that her son was taken to soon and could be restored to life.

Hebrews 11:35 says,  Women received back their dead by resurrection.  Some were tortured, refusing to accept release so that they might rise again to a better life.  This verse is referring to 1 Kings 17: 17-24 and 2 Kings 4:8-26. Both of these women responded with faith toward God in suffering situations and were rewarded with great miracles.

By Faith, this mother made no preparations for burial.  By faith, she made preparation for a resurrection.  By faith, she didn’t give up.  She did not put her faith in man but in God.

Do you have this kind of faith?

Do you give up when things don’t go the way you think it should?

Do you doubt God when actively put your faith to the test?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for meeting our deep emotions.  I pray that we will seek you in all of our trials.  I pray that we will have faith like this mother.

In Jesus Name

Amen
