A Nursing Mother Taking Care Of Her Children

But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.  So, being affectionately desirous  of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.  1 Thessalonians 2:7-8

In one of my bible study groups I am apart of, we have been talking about being spiritual moms to other women.  Women that don’t have a physical mom or women that are young in their spiritual walk.  Any women that needs a mom and a spiritual mom for that matter.  We all need sound, mature godly people in our lives.

Missionaries, evangelists, and pastors to the Thessalonians felt this way.   They made lots of sacrifices on behalf of others to tell about Jesus.  They have a heavy burden on them to tell others about Jesus.  They have a caring and gentle attitude.  They do whatever they have to do to protect, nurture, and  meet the spiritual needs of God’s people. When I say gentle, sometimes that gentleness comes with a firm tone.  They shared their lives with them.

They do not act superior or as important people.  They are patient with those growing in their faith.  This is not always an easy task.  They devoted long hours to these people to bring the message of Jesus to them, to help them grow in their faith.  They helped them to establish an effective ministry in their church.

This is the example that Paul and the other apostles did for us.  They showed us how to be spiritual mentors to others.  They took care of the people like nursing mothers taking care of their children.

For those who are mature Christians:

Do you feel the call to mentor those who are young in their faith?

Women:  Do you feel the need to mother those young women in their faith?

For the young christians:

Do you feel that you could use a mentor?

Could you use a spiritual father or mother in your life?

Pray for this need.  We need each other.  Remember though don’t let humans take the  place of God.  This can happen.  Remember that we are all humans, we are not perfect yet.  We all have lots of growing to do.  However, we can help each other grow in Christ with the Holy Spirit’s help.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending mentors, spiritual coaches, or whatever you want to call them to help us grow in you.  I pray that if anyone needs a mentor, that you will make that happen.  I pray for those of us that have been walking with you for a while now, that we will have the heart and desire to mentor those you put into our path. Give us the wisdom and knowledge to teach and guide them with the help of the Holy Spirit.

In Jesus Name

Amen
