Advent: Nineteen

And all who heard it were amazed a what the shepherds said to them.  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.  The shepherds returned, glorified and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.  Luke 2:18-20

Mary is a good role model for us.  When everything was said and done, and everyone moved on, Mary stored up these treasures in her heart and pondered on them.  She treasured God’s word.  What was required of Mary being the mother of the Messiah?  She had courage.  If we are to walk in our calling, we are going have to have courage.  We are going to have to be down on our knees in prayer and be dependent on God.  Our only hope! Jesus is our only guide on this journey that He has called us to.

Jesus had to carry His cross to death; we will also need to pick up our cross for His plan and purpose.  Jesus trusted God, Mary trusted God, and we also must trust God.  The cross is death.  It is not easy to carry our cross.  It is dying to ourselves, and that can be hard.  Daily we need to die to ourselves to serve and love truly.  Surrendering is the path we choose when living for God.

I don’t think Mary knew that one day she would watch her son die on the Cross.  I don’t know if she truly understood what this path of Jesus meant.  All I do know is that she loved God; she loved her Messiah, who became her son.  She remained faithful in the toughest moments in her life.

Can you take her example and be faithful in your path with God?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending an example to us on how to ponder on your word.  Thank you for showing us how to be faithful.  I pray that we will die to ourselves and trust in you.  I pray that we will treasure your word in our hearts.

In Jesus Name

Amen
