Devotions

Burdened

But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:3

How would you describe a person who follows Jesus?  What should their life look like? What would you say their goal would be for their life?

We all have opinions of what it means to follow Jesus Christ.  We get things opinions from our families, friends, and church culture.  Let’s take some time and learn from Jesus and His word on how to follow Him.

How often do we as Christians make following Jesus about what we do and what we know? Do you equate faithfulness with knowing and doing?

Reread our scripture today.  ‘But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.’ 2 Corinthians 11:3.  If we are not careful intentional about our relationship with Jesus, we can miss our goal.  We can miss the simplicity and purity of our relationship with Jesus when we diminish following Him to doing things for Him or knowing things about Him.

From these following verses, what three relationships do we see?  Where do we see these relationships in the life of Christ?  What can we learn about Jesus through these relationships that we could never gain through our knowledge and doing?

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing. John 15:5

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:12

As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. John 17:18

Read John 13: 34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”  How the three relationships Jesus walked in interdependent?

What do we learn about living for Jesus and allowing Jesus to live in and through us?

Jesus’ three relationships are about a relationship with God, a relationship with our brothers and sisters in Him, and our relationship with the world.

Take some time today and read Matthew 4:1-11; 26:36-46; Luke 4:1-13; Mark 14:32-42; and Mark 1: 12-13; Luke 22:40-46; Luke 6:12-13; John 14:22; John 5:19, John 3:1-21; Luke 19:1-10, and John 4:7-38

Join me tomorrow as we learn more about following Jesus!

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for loving us and sending Jesus to show us the way.  I pray that we will learn how to follow you not out of duty, or religion, but because of the relationship we have with you.
In Jesus Name

Amen
