Read the Book of Titus. In verse 4, Paul called Titus “my true son in our common faith.” Titus was a Greek, most likely from Antioch in Syria. He traveled with Paul and Barnabus from Antioch to Jerusalem. They went to discuss Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles. Read Galatians 2. Titus was a Gentile. He became a follower of Christ without the Jewish tradition of circumcision. Titus is an example of being saved through faith in Christ without obeying the ceremonial laws of Moses.
Titus is not mentioned in the book of Acts. Paul mentions Titus 13 times in his letters. Titus worked closely with Paul. Read 2 Corinthians 2:13; 7:6;13-14;8:6,23. Titus is a man of unusual tact and ability because Paul sent Titus to the churches with big problems. Titus had done well with handling those issues.
The purpose of Paul writing to Titus is to give Titus apostolic authority and guidance to deal with opposition; to provide instructions about faith and conduct; to provide warnings about false teachers.
Introduction to Titus – Chapter 1:1-4
Why does Paul mention his relationship with God and Christ? How does a person get chosen or elected to God’s family? To what does the truth of the gospel lead in daily living? Do we have eternal life now or later? When did God plan to save us? Why does Paul stress his call and authority from God? Why does Paul refer to Titus as his true son of the faith?
Paul was a servant of God under the authority of God. As an apostle, Paul was sent by Jesus Christ to establish the church. By mentioning God and Christ, he is stating his authority to guide and manage the church. Paul and Titus have to use this authority in the church at Crete.
“For the faith of God’s elect.” What does elect mean? It comes from the Greek word elektos, which means chosen. Some interpret this to mean that God decides who will be saved. However, God commanded believers to take the gospel to all people (Matthew 28:19). God wants all to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4). God offers salvation to everyone. Each person chooses to accept or reject salvation. All who accept Jesus as Savior become part of God’s elect, chosen people (1 Peter 1:1-5).
Do you want to accept salvation?
Dear Heavenly Father,
As we study the book of Titus, I pray that you will speak to us and show us your truths.
In Jesus Name
Amen
