Do you have a church that you attend?
Are you breaking bread with your brothers and sisters in Christ?
This has a twofold meaning. The first expression in Acts and the early church refers to sharing meals in one another’s home. How often do you cultivate relationships with others in your church? Do you ask them to your home for a meal?
The other expression could refer to the agape love meal or the Lord’s Supper. Read first Corinthians 11:21, “for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry, and another is drunk.” This was a means of expressing thankfulness towards God and each other. They enjoyed each other’s company. They were caring and sharing community. They were people that were of gratitude and hospitality. He charges them not only with discord and division, but with scandalous disorder: For in eating every one taketh before the other his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken. Heathens used to drink plentifully at their feasts upon their sacrifices. Many of the wealthier Corinthians seem to have taken the same liberty at the Lord’s table. They would not stay for one another; the rich despised the poor, ate and drank up the provisions they themselves brought before the poor were allowed to partake; and thus some wanted, while others had more than enough. This was profaning a sacred institution and corrupting a divine ordinance, to the last degree. What was appointed to feed the soul was employed to feed their lusts and passions. What should have been a bond of mutual amity and affection was made an instrument of discord and disunion. The poor were deprived of the food prepared for them, and the rich turned a feast of charity into a debauch. This was scandalous irregularity.
Do you have a community of people to show gratitude and love?
God created us to be people to function and thrive in a community environment. We need to be in the right relationship with him and others.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for having us be people that have to have a community. Thank you for the Lord’s supper. That we can take the time and remember you and all that you did for us, I pray that we will have a heart like the people of Act 2. That we will cultivate a relationship with others.
In Jesus Name
Amen
