We don’t take warnings or truth very well. In fact, seldom do I meet a person who handles truth and warnings very well. We don’t stop to really think about the consequences. Our choices will affect others. Whether it is good or bad, it affects others. Being affected by other choices can be directly or indirectly. Through Eve, we learn that talking to Satan and walking with God do not go hand in hand.
Read Genesis 3:4-5. How does Satan cast doubt on the things God had said concerning the forbidden trees? He casts doubt by putting doubt on the truthfulness of God’s word. Then He brings doubt in God’s motives. He puts the thought that God is withholding something good from Eve.
Compare Genesis 3:6 to 1 John 2:16. What are the parallels in Satan’s temptation with the “lust of the flesh,” “lust of the eyes,” and ” boastful pride of life”? Temptation can be traced to all three of these statements. The sin in the garden is way more than eating the forbidden fruit. It is disobedience to God. It is not trusting God. It believes the lies of Satan. It was Adam and Eve putting their will above God’s. Isn’t this what we do today?
The failure! Then add how they responded to their failure. Read Genesis 3:7-8. How did Adam and Eve deal with their failure? They were starting to hide from God when they heard him walk in the garden. Their pride was taking over, and they wanted to hide what they did wrong. Pride never wants to be found out. Humility will take on the responsibility for failure. OH, how hard that can be! The struggle we all have with this. How did God confront their sin? Continue reading Genesis 3:9-11. God asks, “Where are you”? Here we see that God wants them to confess what they have done.
What do Adam and Eve do next? They blame each other, Satan, and they even blame God. As you finish chapter 3, What are the consequences of their sin?
If we are smart, we will learn from Eve’s mistakes. Let’s evaluate where we are at in our relationship with God. Are you reflecting the Image of God or the world? Are you reproducing a Godly heritage – are you sharing Christ or keeping it separate?
God comes with mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love.
Dear Heavenly father,
Thank you for your love and forgiveness. I pray that we will study your word to know your truth. Give us the wisdom to discern the truth from the lies. I pray that we will learn from Eve and the many lessons we can learn from the first three chapters of Genesis.
In Jesus Name
Amen
