Faith and Doubt

And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible for one who believes.  Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief.” Mark 9:23-24

The statement ‘all things are possible’ must not be taken as an unconditional promise.  “All things” doesn’t mean that what comes to our minds or our desires are under God’s will.  Our prayers and faith must be with God’s will, his desires, plans, and purposes.  We must know and expect God to answer our prayers for something that is not foolish, selfish, or wrongly motivated.

The faith required for powerful and miraculous acts must be received and used as a gift from God.  God inspires this kind of faith in the hearts of believers.  Believers who are living faithfully according to his will.

Our faith can be mixed with questions and doubts.  Our lack of faith, as long as it is ourselves and our own inadequacies, he can work past our doubt.  We never want to doubt God’s power and abilities.   When we struggle with our faith, it doesn’t mean that Christ will not respond to our prayers.  God expects us to grow and mature in our faith.  He also understands and sympathizes with our weaknesses.  When we lack in our faith, we need to admit and pray for God to give us faith so we can serve him effectively and give him honor.

Do you ever doubt God’s power and ability?

Does your faith ever weaken or does it grow and mature daily?

Do you ever put your prayers and faith into foolish, selfish, or wrong motivates?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this beautiful day!  I pray that our faith will grow and mature in you daily.  I pray that we don’t have selfish ambition, but a desire to do your will.  I pray that when we start to doubt that you will give us the faith we need to push through.

In Jesus Name

Amen
