In our world today, we are so busy, stressed, over-committed, and overwhelmed. We look for apps that have the bible on it, or devotions. However, do we actually take the time to sit down at the feet of Jesus and listen to His word, to pray, to worship him?
Psalm 27:4 is a testimony of King David’s steadfast determination. It is his determination that no matter what happened in his day, he first spent time with God. If he did this then he had accomplished a lot for that day. He was ok with not getting anything else done. He cultivated an intimate relationship with God because God was the number one priority in His life. Was he perfect… no, however, he sought God out. Just as King David made God priority in his life, we also need to as believers make God priority. How does that look to you? Everyone has an opinion of when and how we spend our time with God. Is there a right way or a wrong way?
Let’s look at Luke 10:38-42. Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
What did Martha choose first? What did Mary choose first?
How Martha’s priorities and choices affect her responses to pressure, to her family, and to Jesus?
What did Jesus say was the only absolutely necessary priority, the One Thing?
Can you relate?
What keeps you from sitting at the feet of Jesus?
How would you describe your relationship with your time with God? Is it negative or positive? What are some of the obstacles that are keeping you from sitting at the feet of Jesus?
What changes do you need to make in your life to make God a priority?
I challenge you to set a priority, make a commitment, be consistent, choose a plan, and integrate other practices. Start small. I have come to learn that I like my first thing in the morning time with God, it is so different than in the middle of the day or in the evening, or bedtime. I had to sacrifice my sleep, which I love. Through that, I have had some very intimate moments with God. Then I came to realize that I need God all day long and night.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for loving us. Thank you for wanting time with each of us. I pray that we will have a desire to seek you and to spend one on one time with you. To find a time with no interruptions, but to really focus in on you and what you want to tell us.
In Jesus Name
Amen
