I belong

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; Ephesians 4:4

Do you connect with others well? Or do you struggle with connecting with others? God made us for a community with one another.  Take a look at what Genesis 2:18 says; The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

While Jesus walked here on earth, he had connected with many people.  However, He had 12 close friends called disciples.  Within that circle, he had Peter, James, and John, who were His closest friends.  He showed us how and why friendships are important to our relationship with God.

What are some ways that have strengthened your relationship with God through other Christians?  Do you desire to have relationships with other Christ-followers?  Why would having a relationship with God compel us to have a relationship with other Christians?

In Hebrews 10:24-35, its says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,  not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.   If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,  but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.  Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?  For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”  It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.   Remember those earlier days after you had received the light when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.  Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times, you stood side by side with those who were so treated.  You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.  So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.”  What is this passage of scripture saying?  Can we do life without one another? Is this something that we as Christ-followers can rightly believe, that we don’t need each other?

Read John 1:12 and Romans 8:15-16.  Do these scriptures help us to understand our connection to other Christians better?

The church isn’t an activity or event that we participant in.   It’s about us belong to the family of God. When we become Christians, we become family to each other.  How do you think about the church?  Do you view it as a family gathering or as something you do to be a good Christian? How are you connecting with other Christians, our brothers, and sisters in Christ?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for showing what is important in this life.  Thank you for showing us how to love one another and to have community with one another.  I pray that we will learn as much as we can about relationships through you.

In Jesus Name

Amen
