Jesus’ Father

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.  John 5:17- 18

Have you ever made such a bold statement in a culture that wont agree with you, and yet you speak bible truth?

This is what Jesus did.  He spoke truth and stated a statement that the the higher ups didn’t understand or like.  Christ was being accused fo breaking the Sabbath day by healing a man and then saying that God was his Father.

Jesus makes a few astounding statements.  First, God is his Father in a unique way.  Second, Jesus maintains unity, communication and  authority with God.  Third, Jesus has the power to give life and raise the dead.  Fourth, He has the right to judge all people. Fifth, Jesus has the equal right to divine honor. Sixth,   He has the power to give eternal life.

Jesus goes further and alleges the example of HIs Father and his Divine authority.  Waiving all other pleas, He equivalents  to the whole, and abides by it.  Matthew 12:8 says, For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.  Jesus explains even deeper what this means. In the week of creation, God spent six days creating the world.  Then,  God rested from what he spent the last six days doing – creating.  However, God is working every day.  He is upholding and governing all creatures.  He is controlling the common providence fo all motion and operations fo nature – to His Glory.

Jesus is not restrained from doing that which has a direct tendency to the glory of God. God created all things by Christ and he supports and governs all by him.  The offense was taken at his doctrine.  It glorifies God to heal on the sabbath.  If it brings glory to God, we can do it on the Sabbath.  The Sabbath is a day for rest, and to get to know God.

Jesus depended on God the Father.  If Jesus depended on God as His Father, shouldn’t we also depend on God the Father.  Shouldn’t we also spend time with God to get to know who he is?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for guiding us to know and understand your Word.  I pray that we will depend on you with all things.

In Jesus Name

Amen
