Knowing God

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.  There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.  So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”   When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”  And Moses said, “Here I am.”  “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”   Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.  Exodus 3:1-6

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”   God said to Moses, “I am who I am.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”   God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’  “This is my name forever,  the name you shall call me from generation to generation.  Exodus 3:13-15

What are these passages of scripture saying to you?  What do these verses teach us?

The greatest pursuit in our lives is to know God.  The amazing truth about God is He wants us to know Him.  He wants us to know Him more!  The Bible is full of stories where God reveals Himself to individuals.  He reveals Himself unique to us all.  God reveals Himself through the Bible, through prayer, and our personal relationship with Him.  God desires us to have an intimate encounter with Him.

Let’s read a series of verses.  With these verses write down what we learn about God of His name, title, or description of God.  Take time to pray before starting this.  Ask God to reveal Himself to you.  Let’s begin!

Genesis 17:1 – When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.

Jeremiah 10:12But God made the earth by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom
and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

Psalm 48:14 – For this God is our God forever and ever;  he will be our guide even to the end.

Hosea 13:4“But I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt.

    no Savior except me.

Isaiah 9:6 – For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Revelation 19: 11, 16

I saw heaven standing open and there before I was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice, he judges and wages war.

On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of kings and Lord of lords.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for wanting a relationship with each of us.  I pray that we will desire to get to know you and who you are by spending time in your word.

In Jesus Name

Amen
