Letting Go of Stuff

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world yet forfeit their soul?  Mark 8:36

What kind of a traveler are you?  Are you one who packs everything for whatever may happen while traveling, or are you a minimalist, and if you need something, you will find the nearest store to buy it?  I will pack everything that I think I may need for a trip.  Thank goodness I have the world’s greatest husband on this matter.  I hate buying extra things when I know that I have them at home; this is a waste of using my money.  What does this cost me in serving Jesus?  Is having all of our stuff in the way of serving and worshipping Jesus?

Let’s read Matthew 6:19.  Does Jesus say that it is a sin to have material possessions?  What will eventually happen to everything that we accumulate on this earth?  Are they any material possessions you spend a lot of time protecting, fixing up, repairing, or replenishing?

God isn’t against us having material possessions.  God blessed Abraham, David, and Solomon with wealth.  It’s not about what we have.  It is about why we have it and whether or not we’ll allow God to use it or remove it.  It is wrong to let what we have to possess us.  Do you have any possessions that possess you?  What is the reason behind having excessiveness?  Are there possessions in your life that you find yourself talking about more than God?  Why is it that important in your life?  Read Matthew 6:21.  Where is your heart at?

Read Luke 12:17-21.  What was the man’s problem?  What was his solution, and what was his plan once he accomplished his solution?  Why did God call the man a fool? We need to learn how to let go of trying to get or hold on to material possessions with no eternal value.  What are some “just in case” things you have been holding onto?  What do you sense God speaking to you right now about those possessions?

We need to remember that everything we have is not ours.  It all comes from God.  Read 1 Chronicles 29:11.  What belongs to the Lord?  What are the possessions that you tend to think of as belonging to you rather than God?

God helps us keep the right perspective on our belongings by asking us to let go of some things.  Read Malachi 3:10-11.  What does God say about giving in these verses?  What is his promise when we let go of our resources and give back to Him?  Can you let go of what God is asking you to let go of?

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that we will ask you what you want us to keep and what we need to let go of in our lives.  I pray that we keep you above all else in our lives and the things we have will be used to glorify you.

In Jesus Name

Amen
