No Longer Slaves

“I no longer call you slaves because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves.  John 15:13-15

In this verse, Jesus takes us from slaves into friendship.  He invited His friends to vital inside information.  What important truths did he reveal from the following verses?

  • Matthew 6:6-8, 16:21, 18:3, 12:36
  • Matthew 6:25-34
  • Mark 12:30-31
  • John 3:3-8
  • John 14:1-6

These words of Jesus and the eternal truths revealed have become very familiar to us. However, can you imagine hearing them for the first time?  According to 1 Peter 1:12, the king told commoners wondrous things even the angels long to know.  Jesus broke the mold of unapproachable, unknowable leadership in other ways.

Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says, “Come to me all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light”.  Jesus, my friend and yours, is willing to help us do the same work we are doing.  Unlike the earthly leaders.  If you teach, he teaches with you; if you’re a surgeon, He is doing surgeries with you.  If you are a cop, He is protecting others with you; If you are doing art, He is creating with you, etc.  Whatever we are doing, He is doing it with us.  What difference do you think it makes when we get in the yoke with Jesus and let Him teach us “inside information”? We wouldn’t know otherwise about true rest and what it means to work together with Him?

Jesus told His disciples that they were more than servants to Him; they were His friend.  Read John 13:1-17.  What stands out to you in this action of Jesus? Where have you seen being a friend of Jesus worn as a badge of pride rather than a towel of humility that reminds the wearer to serve? Why is it important for true friends of Jesus to walk in humility toward others?

As friends of Jesus, we are inside abiders.  We have access to a wealth of information about the kingdom of God that affects the past, present, and future of this world.  True friends of Jesus learn from Him.   We love more.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for being our friend.  Thank you for revealing your truths to us.

In Jesus Name

Amen
