Our Shepherds Joy

Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Luke 2:10

How do you handle disappointments?

Or how do you handle unmet expectations?

Did you know that expectations can be an idol??

Did you know that joy is not based on your circumstances but in the choice to live in God’s extravagant grace?

The first Christmas had both unmet expectations and unexpected circumstances.  What were Joseph and Mary’s unmet expectations and unexpected circumstances?  I don’t think they expected baby Jesus to be born so far from their home!  Or how about the manger?? What mother would want to use a manger for a crib?  What mother would want to deliver their baby in a barn?  However, even though this was unexpected and unexpected circumstances, they found joy in the birth of Jesus.

Angels announced the arrival of Jesus to the shepherds.  The shepherds come to see Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus.  Being a shepherds was a lowly occupation.  Yet God used shepherds many times in his plans and purposes.

Shepherds have important responsibilities to their flock.  They protected, provision, and presence.  Just as the shepherds took care of their flock; so does Our Lord!  He is also known as our shepherd.  He protects us.  He has provision, and His presence is always with us.  We can trust God to take care of everything. Even in the unexpected or unmet expectations and circumstances in our lives.  We can still have joy through it all.  We can find joy in the mist of loss, anguish, and depression.  We can find joy in the victories and the answered prayers.  We can have JOY! And share it.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for you joy.  Thank you That because of you we can have joy in the hardest of situations.  Thank you for being our great shepherd.  Help us to be a joy giver to those around us.

In Jesus Name

Amen
