Matthew 21:18-19 and (Mark 11:12-14
In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.
This section is symbolic verses. In research, fig trees in Jerusalem at this time of year I this passage were usually not in full mature leaves. However, this tree was. When the leaves are fully mature, there should be evidence of fruit.
The symbolism here is Israel. Israel is in an hypocritical state in general. They are focus on the law of their religion and not producing any fruit. Christ is looking for mature believers, but doesn’t find many fruit barriers. The purpose of Jesus cursing the fig tree is to show the state of the nation and the people. After they rejected Christ, blindness and hardness grew within them. Which causes them to wither like the fig tree.
If we, as Christ followers, don’t produce fruit in our relationship with Christ and others, we will suffer and/or wither like this fig tree.
Where are you at the being a mature christian?
Are you producing fruit?
Are you not producing fruit?
What is your hang up with not producing fruit?
Are you maturing in Christ?
Dear Heavenly Father,
I praise your holy name. I pray that we are growing in Christ and maturing in our fruits. I pray that we don’t harden ourselves against you.
In Jesus Name
Amen
