Passover Week Devotions: Sabbath

. Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord you’re God.  On it you shall not do any work, you , or your son, or your daughter, your male servant or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.  For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them, and rested on the seventh day.  Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11

Day 2:  Sabbath Day of Rest

This is not mentioned in the gospels. However, this is a Jewish Sabbath day and Jesus being Jewish spent his day in this fashion.  Let’s learn about a sabbath day.

Shabbat is rest or cessation, or sabbath.  Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, which Jews day of rest.  They remember this day form Genesis creation.  When God created the heavens and the earth in six days, he made a sabbath observation observing the refraining from work activities, and engaging in restful activities to honor the day.

It is first commanded after the Exodus from Egypt.  Exodus 16:22 says, ” on the sixth day, they gathered twice as much – two omers for each person – and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.”

  Sabbath has three purposes:

  1.  to commemorate God’s creation and rested
  2. commemorate the Israelites redemption from slavery in ancient Egypt
  3. a test of Olam Habanero’s (Messianic Age)

Keeping this day Holy is sitting it apart from the other days.  We are to restrain from our work.  We are to copy God’s example.  He rested we should also rest.

Matthew 12:8 says, ” for the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

Mark 3:4 states,” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.  Then in Hebrews 4:9 says, “So then, there remains a sabbath rest for  the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.  Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

Jesus is Lord of the sabbath, he rested, God rested. We need to be obedient to God and have a day of rest.  We need to slow down and give a day to focus on God and allow him to minister to us.  We need to rejuvenate ourselves in Him.  Do you give God a day of rest?  Do you take a day to focus on our Triune God?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for fo this wonderful day that you have made.  I pray that we will find a day to rest as you have commanded.

In Jesus Name

Amen
