We have been studying the book of First Timothy now for a few weeks. We have learned about the need for the correct doctrine, proper attitudes, and a good reputation. In Chapters 5 and 6, we will learn about the right relationships. Paul refers to the church body as a family in chapter three.
Today read 1 Timothy 5:1-16. Put yourself into context. Make a list of the qualifications of a widow who is to be taken care of by the church. Then make a list of the characteristics of one who is not to be taken care of by the church.
In 1 Timothy 5:1-2, Paul gives a general introduction of several groups. They are older widows, younger widows, elders, slaves, and the rich. In verses 17-25, we will explore principles for these groups of believers in the family of God. Relationships are one of the biggest challenges believers face. People are messing. Paul teaches Timothy to reach church members for these groups like family members- fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers.
Aristotle was a non-christian philosopher of Paul’s day. His writings reveal the ancient values of Greek families. Aristotle wrote that a person should allow his friends and brothers “freedom of speech and the use of common things.” This means that people should be able to share ideas and possessions. Do some unbelievers practice more love and respect than Christians practice? We, as believers, should be examples of God’s love – at home, at work, and in the church.
Paul led younger men, such as Timothy and Titus, to live the Christian life and serve as leaders. Read Acts 16:1-5; 2 Cor. 8:23; and Gal. 2:1. He did the same with John Mark -Acts 15:37-40; 2 Timothy 4:11. Even for Demas, who later deserted Paul because he loved the world. In our lifetime, there will be relationships that go astray for whatever reason. However, we are to love them like family members – as brothers and sisters.
Even though First Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus speak to ministers, as members of the church, we can also learn from these books. We are all called to minister; we are all called to love one another.
Dear Heavenly Father
Thank you for giving us ministers to help us through this life. I pray for every minister that you have called. Give them rest, give them wisdom, give them peace and comfort. Show us how we can help them within the church and outside the church.
In Jesus Name
Amen
