Responsibilities To Others

Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, exhortation, and teaching.  1 Timothy 4:13

We have been learning about Timothy is to be an example of sound discipline to the congregation.  What is the instruction Paul gives Timothy in verse 13?  The church service is to include the public reading of Scripture.  Scripture is powerful.  It changes people’s lives and brings them out of darkness into the light.  Let’s look at an example of the power of the Scripture.  Then we will know why not neglect the public reading of Scripture.

Read Nehemiah 8:1-12.  What are the events that are happening in this passage? Do you see the power of Scripture?

Timothy obeys God’s commands.   Paul desired that he continue in the path he had started to provide an example for others.  Timothy was possibly a timid young man.  His timidity could hinder him from making a bold assertion of Christian truth.  Paul wanted Timothy to speak with authority.  He wanted Timothy to teach these things.  By issuing the directives and instructions from 1 Timothy 4:6-10, Paul provided several emphases to characterize Timothy’s ministry.

Timothy was to live as a spiritual example of what a believer indeed can be.  He was to apply himself to reading, preaching, and teaching.  Timothy was not to neglect the spiritual gift he had received.  He was to be consistent in his spiritual growth.

The best antidote for error is a positive presentation of the truth.  As a teacher of the truth, Timothy was to demonstrate personal godliness that he might be a living example to his congregation.  Church members will follow someone whom they respect.

What did the false teachers teach? What was Paul’s response? What are practical ways for the church to guard the gospel against heresy and false teaching? What is apostasy? How is it evident in our churches today? What should be our course of action to address it?  What steps did Paul emphasize when instructing Timothy on how to perform his tasks?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your Word.  I pray that we will keep studying it and learning from it.  I pray that our words and action will line up with what your Word says.

In Jesus Name

Amen
