Servant Of God

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on the cross.  Philippians 2:5-8

The Bible shows many passages of Jesus being God’s servant.  He came to serve to accomplish God’s purposes.  In Matthew 20:26-28 it says, “whoever wants to become great must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Do you believe that you should be God’s servant?

Are you God’s servant?

Have you given your very best to serve God?

What is a servant? Is this a worldly definition or a biblical one?

Let’s look at Jeremiah 18:1-6, “This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ‘Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.’ So I went down tot he potters’ house, and I saw him working at the wheel.  But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. “Then the word of the Lord came to me: ‘O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?’ declares the Lord.  ‘Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of  Israel.'”

I really like how this was explained to me about being a servant.  The clay has to do two things. First, it has to be molded.  It needs to be responsive to the potter, that way the potter can make any instrument of His choosing. The second is the clay has to stay in the potter’s hand.  For example, if the potter made a cup, the cup has to remain in the potter’s hand so he can use it how he needs to.  When we go to God as His servant, we have to be willing to allow God to mold and shape us into the instrument of His choosing.  He will then take your life and put it where He wills and works though it ao accomplish His purposes.

We, being servants of God, have two things to do.  First, we have to be moldable and second, remain in God’s Hands. God then can use us as He needs to.  We can’t do anything for the kingdom by ourselves.  WE can only do what God wants us to do.  Servanthood requires obedience. We must do as God asks of us, but remember that it is God who is making the accomplishments, not us.

Being a servant of God is relating, responding, and adjusting our lives to Him so that He can do whatever he wants to do through us.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that we will be like clay and be moldable to your ways.  I pray that we will remain in you.  I pray that we will have the attitude of Jesus. God, I also ask that we will remember that anything we do through you is not of us but of you.  You are making everything happen, not us.

In Jesus Name

Amen
