The Gardener

“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener.  He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.  You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.”  John 15:1-3

Do you know God?  Do you know who He is?  Do you know what He is like?

Jesus uses two metaphors in these first three verses.  These metaphors reveal important things about who The Father and Himself are.  Jesus states that He is the TRUE grapevine.  Why do you think it is important that He states that He is the TRUE?  We live in a world where we are not sure what is true and what is untrue.  However, Jesus wants us to know that He is TRUE and He is the Truth.

Let’s stop and ponder on this question.  Have you ever spent time with a person who lies?  If you have, how do you feel after being with someone who lies a lot?  What is the effect emotionally and rationally?  I have to say from experience; I don’t care to hang around people who lie.  They make me question what is real and what is fake.  I lose my trust in anything they have to say.  I question their motive in everything they say and do.  Does this sound like people that we want to settle in and do life with?  No, it’s not.

Jesus is saying He is Truth and True.  In John 14, he even stated that He is the way, the truth, and the way.  We can trust and believe Jesus.  When we can trust Him, our soul can settle in and abide in Him.

Let’s read:

Jeremiah 5:3, “Lord, you are searching for honesty.”

Psalm 145:18, ” The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.

John 4:24, “For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

What do we learn about God from these verses?  What does God value according to these verses?

Let’s dig deeper into verses that show that the Bible is true and fully inspired Word of God.

Psalm 119:160; Proverbs 30:5; John 17:17; Ephesians 1:13; Colossians 1:5-6; 2 Timothy 3:15-17, and James 1:18.  What do these verses claim to be true and God’s revealed truth?  How can we now respond to these truths?

John 8:44 says, ” For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does.  He was a murderer from the beginning.  He has always hated the truth because there is no truth in him.  When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.  What is the characteristic of Satan?  What are some lies that Satan uses to deceive people today?  What lies has he tried to use against you?  How can you use the Truth of God’s Word to expose and defeat his lie?

When we belong to God of truth, we can live a life of truth.  We can live in honesty, authenticity, and integrity.  We can live an abiding life in Jesus.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for revealing the truth to us.  I pray that our soul is able to tell the difference between lies and truth.  I pray that we will abide in you all the days of our life.

In Jesus Name

Amen
