The Light

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

What was the first thing God created?  Read Genesis 1:1-5.  How did God create this light? According to Genesis 1:2, what was the world like?

The world was in a dark, void, without form place. The first thing God said that needed to be created was light.  He separated the light from the dark.  What is the function and purpose of light in creation?  Here are a few things it does: It dispels darkness revealing what is hidden; it illuminates what is beautiful, it gives warmth; it causes growth, and it sustains life.  This is a great illustration of the light of God and how God is not a passive experience.  We experience and respond to the light of Christ.

Genesis is not the only book of the bible that starts out with light.  The book of John also starts out with light as well.  Read John 1:1-5.  Thousands of years later after the creation of light, the actual LIGHT came into the world in the form of Jesus to save us from the ultimate darkness.  What do we learn from this passage about the light?  One thing that stuck out to me in this passage is that darkness cannot overcome the light.  “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5.  However, it is trying every day to conquer the light.

Read 2 Corinthians 11:14  “And no wonder, for even Satan, disguises himself as an angel of light.”  How does Satan disguise himself?  If we can recognize Satan for who he is when he tries to show up in our lives as light, we can call him out and right out to the real Light – Jesus.

Where in your own life does darkness disguise itself as light?  Think about what your peers are talking about, posting on social media, and behaving.  How can we tell the difference between the right light and the disguised light?  Read Psalms 119:105 and 130.  We can tell by putting everything up to God’s word the Bible.  How do we do this though?  Let’s read some scripture verses.  Look up and read 2 Corinthians 4:6, Psalm 119:130, Isaiah 60:19-20; John 3:19-21, 1 John 1:5-7; James 1:17.  Make a list of what each of these verses says HIs light will bring.

Are you needing some guidance in your life today?  Can you hold it up to God’s word and let the light help you in the situation you are in?

The world is telling us that we don’t need God’s word, that it is out of date or not even true.  We are encouraged to go by how we feel.  This can be a scary situation of relying on our feelings.  This is a lie from Satan.  The bible is our handbook for living.  Keep it close and use it as a light unto your path every day, throughout the day.

As we wrap up our study on light, this read Revelation 22:1-5.  It says, ‘Then the angel[fn] showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life[fn] with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.  They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.  And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.’

Did you see any creation themes?  Why will we no longer need the light of the lamp or the light of the sun? In the end, Jesus will become the only true light we will ever need.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your light.  Thank you for sending a tool to help us to know the truth and have a way to measure truth and lies to that.  Thank you for weaving the bible together.  You are so wonderful.

In Jesus Name

Amen
