Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. James 3:10
Can you control your tongue? Does it give life or death? The tongue is a powerful tool. Here are some vital concepts: God’s words are omnipotent; our words are potent because we were created in God’s image. Our words are potent whether we used them positively or negatively. God desires not only that HIs children believe the truth, but we speak it. God ordains that words of faith have more power than thoughts of faith alone.
Our faith can become our voice, and our voice becomes power when we are obedient to God’s will. This is why prayer is so powerful. God’s word dwells in us.
Read James 3:2-12. What do we learn from this passage? According to verse 2, how many people do you imagine rarely struggle with their tongues? Our tongue is a huge challenge for us all. When a person can control their tongue, this is one sign of spiritual maturity. What is the answer to every question in verses 11-12?
What are some ways that we misuse our tongue? Gossip, lying, profanity, rudeness or unkindness, inappropriate humor, and the misuse of God’s name. Let’s talk about gossip. This is a little tricky. We can rationalize it as a concern or as a prayer request. It’s a trap that we can easily fall into without realizing it right away. Lying is for excuses and/or cover-ups of what we have done wrong or to make us look better than what we are. Profanity is a habit-forming way we use our words. Remember, gossip is a habit that can be broken.
Read Psalm 145: 18. What does this verse tell us? What approach do we take that draws God most readily?
There are a few things that can ruin our witness. They are rude, unkind, and arrogant, as well as what I mentioned above, like gossip and profanity. Are there any other misuses of the tongue that can hinder our witness to others?
Read Galatians 5:15-16. Does this scripture create a mental picture to which most of us can sadly relate? What is the exhortation in verse 16?
Our God is forgiving. A redemptive God. God is there to help us. As we grow more in Him, he will help us to control our tongue.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for being with us and helping us in our imperfections. I pray that we will learn to control our tongues.
In Jesus Name
Amen
