The Virtuous Woman

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”  Proverbs 31:30

The first place that the bible uses the phrase “virtuous woman” is in Ruth.  Boaz described Ruth’s reputation this way.  It is used again in Proverbs by Solomon.  When were you first introduced to the woman of Proverbs 31? How did it make you feel?  Do you compare yourself to her, Ladies?

Let’s read Proverbs 1: 2-4.  What is the purpose of the book of Proverbs? How do we access what it has to offer?

It is to give us the knowledge to have wisdom.  It gives us instructions.  With this in mind, what can we learn and apply from the woman of Proverbs 31?

Let’s read Proverbs 31:10.  Who is this verse supposed to be speaking to?  What is the main message? What is its application towards women?

The introductory verse is directed first of all to King Lemuel.  This was written to men to know what to look for in a woman as they seek a wife.  This type of woman is rare and hard to find.  To the man who finds such a wife, she will prove to be the greatest treasure.

Read verse 25.  What do you think it means that she “clothes” herself with strength and dignity?  What does the phrase “smiles at the future.” say about her?  According to verse 22, she does not let her outer appearance go to neglect.  She takes care of herself. She is confident and strong.  Our words that we speak can also say a lot about our character.  Matthew 12:34, Jesus said, ‘. . .  the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.’ What comes out when she opens her mouth?  What flavors is her teaching?  How do these two balance each other?  She speaks with wisdom.  It is favored with kindness.  Wisdom given without kindness can hurt more than help.  Wisdom without kindness becomes the “I told you so.”   Though, this woman’s wisdom is shared with a kind heart, making it easier to swallow.

Read verse 30.  What actions does the world employ to earn praise?  How is charm deceitful. How is the fear of God rewarded?

There are so many nuggets to glean from this passage.  Take the time to read this chapter.  What does this chapter teach us about relationships?  What are some specific things that build trust in a husband?  What things destroy trust? What result does a husband have in a virtuous woman for his wife?

Your reputation is what those who don’t know you well think you are – your character is what those who know you well know you are.  We all need to grow in this area.  Out of these three areas: development of your own character, your labor/work, and your relationships, what needs the most work?

Read the following scriptures and make notes to remind you of who you are and whose you are!  Romans 3:24, 28, Romans 5:1-2, Romans 8:2,10, Romans 11:16,  Galatians 2:20, Ephesians 1:3, Colossians 3:3, 1 Thessalonians 5:24, and 2 Peter 1:3.

Dear Heavenly Fathers,

Thank you for giving us the book of Proverbs.  I pray that we will learn all that you want us to learn and then apply it to our lives daily.

In Jesus Name

Amen
