In the beginning, was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made. IN him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness has not overcome it. John 1: 1-5
Who is the word? What is the good news of the word?
John starts out his gospel with calling Jesus ‘the Word’. John is stating Jesus as the personal word of God through whom God spoke all things into existence. In Hebrews 1:1-3 God has spoken and revealed himself to us through Jesus Christ His son. Since Jesus is supreme over all things, God’s word is complete. Jesus declares that his own words are directly from God.
In the Bible it states that Jesus is God’s wisdom for us in every way. He helps us to understand and accomplish God’s will and purposes. The word shows us the Jesus is the perfect revelation and representative of God’s character and nature.
There are three characteristics of Jesus as the word. The first one is the word in relation to God. Jesus was with God before the creation of the world. He was a person existing without beginning or end. He is distinct from God the father. Yet unified relationship with God. Jesus is eternal and Devine. He was not created. Jesus is divine- the Word is God! Jesus has the same nature, character, and quality as God the Father. Jesus will always be in a loving relationship with God and the Holy Spirit.
The next characteristic is the word in relation to the world. Not only was everything made by Christ, but they were for him also. It is through Jesus that the world was created by God.
The last characteristic is the Word in relation with humanity. The Word became flesh! In Jesus, God became man. He took on our human form without the sin. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit!
John also speaks about life! Jesus is described as the bread of life. Also described as the water of life. Bread and water which we humans depends on to live. We also need Jesus to live an eternal life. Jesus is the life. He is also described as light! His life is our light here on earth.
