When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty, walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between you and me, and may multiply you greatly.” Genesis 17:1-2
Past the age of bearing children for Sarai and Abram being old, God makes a covenant with Abram. God declares himself as God Almighty to Abram, meaning that He is all-powerful. There is nothing impossible with God. God Almighty can fulfill his promises even when there seems to be no way to meet them. This is how God brings Abram’s promised son into the world.
With this, though, God asks Abram to be blameless. God asks Abram to follow him. Abram needed to have faith in God to receive His covenant. He also needed to make a sincere effort to please God to have the covenant. Abram had to prove His faith by being obedient to God. If he weren’t obedient, this would disqualify him from being a part of God’s eternal purposes. God’s promises and miracles are only fulfilled when His people are entirely dedicated to living their lives for God, to being obedient and committed to following God.
The phrase “Walk before me” is a different way of saying walk with me. Look at the word before. The Hebrew word for before is paniym. It means in front of, before, to the front of, in the presence of. God is asking Abram to walk in the presence of God Almighty and be blameless ( to be innocent, integrity, and complete in truth and fact). Remember God promised Abram the promised land. That promise was fulfilled. God promised Abram that Sarai would have a child that kings would come from them.
Do you believe that staying blameless before God will help keep God’s promises?
Do you walk before God blameless?
What do you think walking before God means in your life?
How do you feel about walking before God?
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for keeping your covenant and promises. I pray that we will honor you by walking before you. I pray that we will be obedient and blameless before you. We love and praise you, God Almighty.
In Jesus Name
Amen
