But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. . . . If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:16, 25
We, as Christ-followers, are to be filled with the Holy Spirit continually, daily. Paul encouraged Ephesus to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18). He exhorted the Galatians to walk by the Spirit. Paul made a point to the believers to allow the Holy Spirit to be in control. Paul was saying to believers to let the Holy Spirit be in control all the time, just not here and there. Paul knew the importance of walking by the spirit. He faced some hard things in his life, yet he walked by the Spirit in these moments and knew how victorious these moments were. Paul wants the same thing for all believers.
Let’s look at some verses of what life looks like when we walk by the Spirit.
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-20
submitting to one another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:21
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, Ephesians 5:22-25
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:1-4
Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own jMaster also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him. Ephesians 6:5-9
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— Ephesians 6:10-18
Do you see where in our lives the Holy Spirit can walk with us?
When we say yes to the flesh, we are grieving the Holy Spirit. This is us quenching the Spirit and resisting Him. What is hindering us in our lives from the Holy Spirit?
Are you filled with the Holy Spirit? If not, you can be. Its, not anything scary or mystical. It’s also not for certain people. All believers have to do is confess all their sins, and walk moment to moment in obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Rely on Him to live His life through us. As we are filled with the Holy Spirit, His supernatural power will be released in us.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the filling of the Holy Spirit in our lives. I pray that we will understand the Holy Spirit and who He is and what he does. I pray that we will not resist or quench the Spirit in our lives.
In Jesus Name
Amen
