What Is Truth? Part 1

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope;  1 Timothy 1:1

What is truth?  Do you struggle with know what is true and what isn’t?  We are going to spend the next five weeks in the book of First Timothy.  You will need paper, pens/colored pencils, and a Bible you don’t mind writing in for this series of devotions.

What do you know about this book?  Who is the author of this book, and who is it to? Today we will spend time determining the context of 1 Timothy Chapters 1-3.  As you read these first three chapters, read as a letter.  This book is a letter from Paul to Timothy.

While you are reading, see if you can see why Paul is writing this letter to Timothy?  Why did Paul leave Timothy in Ephesus?  When you can answer these two questions, you will understand why he says what he says.  For the first reading – read straight through – don’t get distracted by difficult passages.  This is to familiarize yourself with the letter.

We are going to learn together the context of this book.  What does context mean?  Context comes from a Latin word that means “to weave together .”  Before we can understand the passage, we need to see what is discussed before and after it.

Before you start to read, pray first and asked the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Did you understand what you read?  Could you answer the two questions above?

If you have time, reread the passages.  This time slowly.  If any questions pop up in your mind, stop and write them down.  Are there any words you don’t know the meaning to  – write them down?

This is all for today!  Good job!

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you, God, for your living word. Thank you for your guidance.  Would you mind guiding each one of us to your truth and how to live for you?

In Jesus Name

Amen
