
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through Angels by and intermediary. Galatians 3:19
Nomos is the Greek word for law and in Hebrew it is Torah. The meaning for law is teaching or direction. The law can refer to the 10 commandments for the Pentateuch which is the first five books of the Old Testament or it could be any command in the Old Testament. But what Paul is pointing out here about the wall would include the sacrificial system that was part of God‘s ultimate covenant with Israel as given to Moses. A covenant Is God’s life agreement with Israel based on his laws and promises to them and on their faithfulness and obedience to him.
Paul states many things concerning the law. First, it was given by God because our transgressions which means the offense against God and expose the sin as a violation of God’s will. It a week in humanity sense Of our need for God’s mercy grace and salvation through Christ. You’ll testament law with Holy, good and righteous, however it was incomplete and that it could not give people spiritual life or moral strength. No matter how well we follow the rules and obey God’s rules, it will not bring us into the right relationship with God.
The law acted as a temporary tutor, or instruction guide, for God’s people, protecting and pointing them in the right direction until complete Jesus Christ came to complete the spiritual salvation. Up until that time, the Law revealed God’s will and standard for his people’s behavior. It also provided a blood sacrifice to cover the peoples sins. It also pointed prophetically to Christ and covered, forgiveness – providing death.
Last, the law was given as a guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. Now that Christ is calm, instructional rule of the law has ended. Through God‘s law still serves to reveal God‘s perfect standard and to expose our need for Christ, we no longer attempt to maintain a right relationship with God through the provisions of the Old Testament law, including the sacrificial system. Salvation is now based on the new covenant. This life agreement is with God in is based on the life, death, and the resurrection of his son Jesus.This new covenant is sealed and providing forgiveness and new life for those who surrender their life to Jesus Christ.
